Cakes and Coffee at Speech and Language Event

Parents, who want to give their children a boost with their communication skills, will be able to pick up tips during a speech and language coffee morning. Bright Kids Nursery in Northfield is holding the event on October 5th where parents and children will be able to take part in an interactive workshop, which looks at ways to develop speaking skills. The one hour workshop will focus on top communication tips to be done at home, and is run by a qualified and experienced speech and language therapist.

Kerrie McCaffery, deputy manager at the Northfield site, said the workshop will also show parents how communication is much more than just speech. She said: “The therapist will explore some top tips for talking, and will engage parents and children in an introduction to Sing and Sign, to consider how effective visual communication can be with all children. Parents will also have the opportunity to talk to the speech and language therapist with any concerns they may have.”

Kerrie said staff at the nursery have training in how to help children with their speech. “We also have a few games that help develop the muscles in the mouth that are linked to speech, such as making a polystyrene ball move by blowing through a straw,” she said.

“The children enjoy a fun game while working those muscles in the face that are important with communication. However, it will be great for parents to talk to the therapist and pick up any tips that may be useful to help boost speaking skills at home.”
